Under supervision, calibrate, configure, fabricate, and deploy oceanography instruments. Procure materials, components, supplies and tools used in assembly of instruments. In conjunction with engineering and senior technical staff, assist with diagnostic maintenance. Deploy and recover oceanographic equipment at sea. Organize materials and parts for the lab. The incumbent must be able to perform high level assembly work of scientific equipment and be able to work from sketches or oral instruction when all components and parts are provided.
-Occasional overtime and irregular hours required.
-Must be able to lift and carry 75 lbs.
-Must be able to drive a forklift with 2500 lb. capacity.
-Ability to assist in small boat operations launched from the SIO Pier.
-May travel to remote locations to facilitate instrument loading and return shipments from sea.
-Must be able to work in varying and sometimes harsh environmental conditions. Ability to work outside and while exposed to the environment.
Ability to read and understand electronic schematics, mechanical drawings, and manufacturers data.
Demonstrated knowledge of conventional materials, processes and tools, and the ability to make proper selection for the required application.
Proven machine shop skills including the use of basic power and hand tools. Experience with basic carpentry tools.
Experience with fine-mechanics tools, hand tools, lathes, drill press, and mill tools.
Ability to maintain the organization of laboratory supplies, equipment tools, and documentation.
Experience in fabrication, and construction of oceanographic instrument systems for the marine environment.
Demonstrated experience with mounting of electronic components from instructions and testing of results.
Proven knowledge of computers including data organization and communications tasks using word processing, spreadsheets, email, and internet search engines.
Graduation from a high school or a GED and two (2) years of technical craft experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must have a valid California driver's license.
Must have or be able to obtain a valid US passport.
