Job Requisition Number: 23715. The Engineering and Technical Services unit of Facilities Services helps develop the vision, strategy, incentives, and initiatives that will align operations, planning and design processes, and resource management with the principles of sustainability.
The Electrical Engineer provides technical support to the Utilities HV Electric Shop and the Building Electric Shop. Must have expertise with 115 kV Outdoor Substation Equipment; Power Transformers; 12 kV Vacuum Circuit Breakers; Protective Relaying Schemes; Unit Substations; Underground 12 kV Distribution.
The incumbent also collaborates with department leadership on development of space planning; evaluates and advises on the design and allocation.
The scope of this position is campus wide and touches all academic and administrative departments and research facilities covering all segments of the University. Its customers include are academics, researchers, students, staff and the general public. Coordinates commissioning and at times acts as Campus Representative. This position is in Engineering and Technical Services unit of the Facilities Services and reports to the Principal Electrical Engineer.
Provide technical support to the Utilities HV Electric Shop and the Building Electric Shop. Must have familiarity with the following equipment: 115 kV Outdoor Substation Equipment; Power Transformers; 12 kV Vacuum Circuit Breakers; Protective Relaying Schemes; Unit Substations; Underground 12 kV Distribution. Collaborates with department leadership on development of space planning; evaluates and advises on the design and allocation.
Make recommendations regarding size, orientation, layout, and clearances for new electrical rooms that will be constructed in new or remodeled buildings. Reviews building management procedures and recommends changes; ensures currency, relevance and adherence to internal and external regulatory requirements. Responsible for performing and/or overseeing engineering studies such as: Short Circuit, Coordination, Load Flow, and Load Growth. Works with Campus occupants to plan space that accommodates non-routine systems and/or research or specialized equipment, and hazardous materials storage and disposal.
Perform Plan Review for 12 kV and building electrical services undergoing replacement or upgrade. Develops budgets for management review to include moves with significant building infra-structure upgrades. Perform updates to Capital Renewal Projects Lists, and other lists of future potential projects that are needed to maintain a sound electrical system on campus. Provide rough cost estimates for those projects. Works with internal and external agencies/contractors as needed in regards to existing contract terms or to solicit or negotiate contracts. Write specifications and coordinate with purchasing department to select bids for maintenance and repair work.. Provides planning and coordination for construction and alteration of projects on a continuing basis. Provide technical assistance to the Construction and Design Project Managers for ongoing projects.
Coordinates emergency repairs during and after work hours. Consult with UC crews and/or contractor crews to perform emergency repairs. Provide technical assistance so that repairs may be performed efficiently and in a timely manner. Coordinates with multiple units throughout campus to provide a safe and secure facilities environment
Work with the following groups: Utility High Voltage Shop; Electric Shop; Real Estate Division Project Managers; Facilities Services Management Team; and, Campus Departments, including LBNL and PG&E, to achieve a safe and reliable electrical distribution system.•Minimum 7 years of experience on 12kv distribution operations or in combination with design and/or construction. •Expert written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, including expert level political acumen and negotiation skills. •Expert knowledge of design and construction, contract administration and California Building Codes, including expert understanding of industry practices or highly specialized and critical disciplines. •Expert project management skills to effectively manage highly complex projects or highly specialized and critical components of projects with a significant impact on campus. •Expert skill in building, maintaining and nurturing strong professional relationships to achieve short and long range program implementation goals. •Expert knowledge in electrical engineering. •Expert skill in promoting, advancing and implementing programs within area of expertise. •High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office •Expert analytical, organizational, project management and problem recognition/avoidance/resolution skills. Education/Training: •Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution Licenses or certifications •State of CA Professional engineering license required
