Reporting to the Senior Director of Student Academic Services, the UnDocuResource Center Coordinator provides information and strategic guidance to create a safe space supporting the educational success, retention, and graduation of undocumented students. The incumbent provides academic and personal advising for undocumented students, designs, updates, and implements campus educational programs and services specific for undocumented students, and builds and maintains partnerships with on- and off-campus resources.
Working independently under general direction, major duties of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
UndocuResource Center (URC) Coordination Develops, designs, and implements programs and services that provide support, advice, and referrals related to various issues and challenges unique to undocumented students Oversees the creation and organization of programs and services in support of the academic success, retention, and graduation of undocumented students who come from low-income backgrounds Creates and conducts assessments of student services and programs with the goals of assisting undocumented students, enriching their campus experience and enhancing their academic success Collaborates with various campus departments to improve outcomes related to the inclusion, retention, and graduation of undocumented students Serves as a subject matter expert pertaining to AB 130/131/540, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), and federal immigration law and policy. Provides appropriate trainings, workshops and resources for administrators, faculty, staff, and students Develops and implements a communication plan to provide potential, incoming, and enrolled undocumented students with timely information on programs, resources, opportunities, events, activities, important deadlines, and academic and co-curricular enrichment opportunities Identifies, cultivates and maintains relationships with local, regional, and national resources and organizations to establish a network of programs, services, and referrals in support of undocumented students Seeks and composes grants for external funding and supports other fundraising efforts Develops and maintains website and other URC materials to provide current information to undocumented students, their families and allies Represents the URC at both on-campus and off-campus events Serves as a resource for students, faculty, staff and the community
Advising Provides direct academic advising to undocumented students Provides advising for the Dream.US scholarship program Makes referrals to various campus partners including student support services, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), financial aid, Career Services, etc. Designs and maintains processes to track academic success of student participants Collects information and provides data on academic needs of undocumented students Prepare oral and written reports, when needed, on issues and concerns of the undocumented students related to campus academic programs
Performs other secondary duties as assigned.
Duties take place primarily in an office setting located at Sonoma State University. The normal work schedule is aligned with regular campus hours Monday through Friday. As an exempt employee you have some flexibility in your schedule however must be available during the regular campus hours Monday through Friday to meet the operational needs of the campus and department. Your specific start time is determined by your Appropriate Administrator. Evening and weekend hours may be required and will be specified only by the supervisor to meet operational needs. The incumbent must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such levels as is determined by the Appropriate Administrator. The position may require occasional travel, by automobile and airplane, and the incumbent must be able to work some night and weekend hours with overnight stays.
Qualifications This position requires the equivalent of graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related. An advanced degree, in Student Affairs, Sociology, Social Work, or any related field, is preferred. The incumbent must have a minimum of three years progressively responsible student affairs work experience. One year working directly with undocumented students in the areas of advising, program development, and coordination and student support services is preferred. A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or a directly related field may substitute for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may substitute for three years of experience. Any equivalent combination of education, training and work experience will be considered as meeting the minimum qualifications for this position. Intermediate proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required.
This position also requires: Knowledge and practice of student development theory, counseling and advising practice, and current trends/issues related to undocumented students in higher education Experience and knowledge in developing, planning, designing, implementing, and assessing student programs Demonstrated experience advising students individually and in groups on academic and personal matters Experience working with students from low income, traditionally underserved, and traditionally disadvantaged backgrounds Comprehensive, current knowledge of AB540 and DACA legislation, resources and educational policies, procedures and practices regarding undocumented students Demonstrated knowledge and understanding about unique issues that impact undocumented, AB540, and DACA students Experience working with and/or understanding of the changing demographics of California youth culture Experience coordinating events including conferences, workshops and trainings Demonstrate multicultural competence through knowledge, skills, and abilities. Bilingual in English/Spanish Familiarity with and/or ability to quickly gain understanding of California State University (CSU) policies and procedures Experience in outreach, networking as well as experience with high impact practices that facilitate access, success, and equity for a diverse student population Excellent written and oral communication skills
In addition, the incumbent must demonstrate the following abilities: Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, and organize programs and services Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action Ability to respond to sensitive situations that involve immigration, deportation, and limited access to education and employment Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and inclusive working relationships amongst diverse populations including staff, faculty, administration, students, and other internal and external constituents The incumbent must be able to accept constructive feedback and work cooperatively in group situations Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters Ability to complete assignments without detailed instructions Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals Ability to orient undocumented students to the culture of the institution and provide support services to help Undocumented Students achieve their educational and personal goals Ability to promote and deepen the understanding of the challenges faced by undocumented immigrants in general, and undocumented students, specifically Ability to provide training to faculty and staff on best practices for support the access, success, retention and graduation of undocumented students Ability to organize and use time management skills to prioritize and meet fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines. Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records Ability to accurately analyze data and prepare reports using a variety of computer applications
