Job Duties - Conduct aerospace engineering research and technical development of prototypes for spacecraft structural elements. - Analyze, design, build and test ultralight carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) deployable structures. Validate intermediate results through analysis and experimentation. - Carry out research to develop alternative options. Develop metrics for prototype improvement. Design and coordinate engineering experiments. - Design and modify experimental techniques and procedures. Develop and implement iterative design and construction methods. - Design manufacturing and assembly process for prototypes and components. - Select material systems, design curing processes, and optimize processing parameters that achieve stable ultrathin structures with high finished shape accuracy. - Prioritize manufacturing activities. - Develop and execute experiments and numerical simulations to model, test and validate the physical behavior of structures and redesign their structural geometry and material composition to improve performance. - Develop nonlinear thermomechanical finite element (FE) models to analyze and predict the behavior of prototypes under various types of simulated conditions. - Review and develop code to efficiently analyze and process large amounts of data from experiments. - Prepare engineering project proposals including scope, schedule and resource estimates for complex technical projects. - Conduct literature research. - Contribute to research publications and reports, and deliver technical presentations at meetings or conferences. - Serve as a mentor to graduate and undergraduate students.
Basic Qualifications - Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering; 2 years of postdoctoral experience as a research scientist, associate, or engineer. - Qualifying experience must include: 2 years in engineering design validation and failure analysis investigation of manufactured products using experimentation and simulation, development of thermomechanical finite element analysis (FEA) models, and manufacturing process optimization.
