Serve as Assistant Technical Director/ Master Carpenter, as that term is commonly understood in the theatre industry, for the Department of Theatre and Dance. Provide technical drawings or, assistance with, for theatrical scenery for the Department of Theatre and Dance. Construct scenic and prop elements; serve as work leader for the production carpenters and the student construction crews.
Supervise builds to completion specifically assigned project work for each production, including complicated wood and metal projects, utilizing stage mechanics, motion control and effects as needed. Build and supervise construction on the shop floor, stage in the theatre, and serve as quality control monitor of standards, pace, and safety. Participate in strikes; oversee maintenance of tools, supplies, shops, and performance spaces; participate in facilities maintenance and upgrade projects. Participate in other special projects as needed, and all other duties as assigned.
Must be amenable to a fluctuating work schedule. Some weekend and evening work required.

Mastery level knowledge of technical aspects of at least one production area such as lighting, sound, video, costumes, hair / make-up, properties, scenery, scenic treatment, etc.
High experience level and skill in various types of scenic construction; wood, metal, plastics, etc.
Finished carpentry skills.
Advanced knowledge of technical theatre; scenery, properties, paints and electrics.
Experience and ability leading and managing a crew of 3-5 carpenters.
Experience in Computer Drafting for Theatre: AutoCAD or VectorWorks.
Experience in both academic and professional scene shops.
Ability to teach and guide carpenters in construction skills and techniques
OSHA 10 hour training certification.
Working knowledge of the University and collective bargaining policies, practices, rules, regulations, etc., including safety rules and regulations.
Good working knowledge / skills in basic financial administration.
Good verbal and interpersonal communication skills to communicate complex instructions and information to disparate constituencies.
Good problem recognition, avoidance and resolution skills.
Ability to meet established deadlines and schedules.
Ability to read and work from scenic drafting and drawings.
Basic knowledge of proper show running.
Knowledge of stage rigging and movement of scenery.
Must have valid California Driver's license with a clean drivers record.
