The University of California, Irvine, working on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN seeks an outstanding candidate with background in electrical engineering to work on a project for experimental particle physics. The position is available immediately. Position Summary: UCI has been a member of the ATLAS collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) since 1994 and is actively involved the Muon Spectrometer and the Trigger and Data Acquisition System. The successful candidate will work on the upgrade of the muon trigger for High-Luminosity LHC upgrade scheduled to be completed by 2025. The candidate is expected to contribute the development of a hardware muon trigger using ATLAS Muon Drift Chambers (MDT). This trigger system consists of ATCA-based, complex, high-speed digital circuits communicating with fiber optics and using FPGA and ARM processors. The candidate will contribute to the R&D and the construction phases and he/she is expected to lead the technical design and specifications definition, develop the firmware for the hardware base trigger and contribute to the validation and testing of the system. Responsibility will include: •Responsibilities will include digital system and logic design, fast analog and digital circuit design and testing, and development of FPGA based trigger systems. •Work will involve design, simulation and troubleshooting embedded systems, involving hands-on hardware prototype. •Lead engineering tasks necessary from the design stages through the review, procurement, manufacturing, integration, testing, and operation of the hardware muon trigger. •Work collaboratively with other engineers and physicists as well as mentor students and postdoctoral researchers working on the project. •Documentation of the firmware/electronics test procedures and test systems. •Publishing scientific papers on ATLAS upgrade. •Presenting work to scientific collaborators, conference, workshop and reviews. Qualification and Essential Job Functions: •Bachelor's Degree or above in Electrical Engineering (BSEE, MSEE or PhD EE), Computer Engineering (BSCE, MSCE or PhD CE) or in Physics/Applied Physics (BS/BSc, MS or PhD Physics). •Ph.D is required for an appointment in the Project Scientist series. •At least 3 years working with electrical circuits and embedded hardware such as FPGA and ARM processors. •Experience in FPGA firmware development and simulation (Verilog and/or VHDL). •Knowledge of electrical design and experience to draw and read electrical schematics. •Experience with electronics testing/qualification is expected, as is knowledge of Unix operating systems and C programming. •Demonstrated ability to plan and carry out independent research and project leadership. •Good verbal and written communication skills.
