Purpose Statement / Position Summary The Applications Specialist I is intended as MHS’ entry level position, providing general applications consulting, systems analysis, and system support related to the acquisition and use of assigned applications. Applies knowledge of applications to ensure effective and optimal use of current applications, incorporation of refinements in applications based on organizational changes or process improvements, and collaboration with senior analysts working on new system solutions. Participates in all phases of large and small projects. Accountable for the success of assigned tasks, operation of assigned systems, and user understanding of applications. Functions as a point of user contact and customer service for Information Services and is accountable for user satisfaction.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job * With some assistance, integrates multiple and disparate applications into unified whole yielding maximal data consistency, overall data integrity, minimal data redundancy, common user interfaces, fault-tolerant and robust intersystem connections, documented data flows and data dictionaries, and secure systems. * Programs or otherwise constructs or controls the flow of screens, capture of data, storage of data, and publication and communication of information associated with applications. * Acts as a point of contact for management and staff in assigned areas related to applications and IS services. Actively participates in interdepartmental meetings and discussions related to business and information systems. * Develops and maintains an awareness of the healthcare information systems industry, contemporary and emerging technologies, and relevant laws and regulations related to assigned applications. * Complies with all IS Policies, Procedures and Standards including: Project Management tools/methodologies, Network/Systems/Workstation Security, HIPAA Privacy and Security Regulations associated with Electronic Protected Health Information (ePHI).
REQUIRED SKILLS: Experience * Requires zero to 1 years’ experience in electronic data interchange (EDI), interfaces, healthcare information systems development and clinical data management. * Basic knowledge of HL7, X12, XML, and/or other interface or Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) standards. * Basic understanding of database structures, data definition and data relationships. * Basic knowledge of Interface engines, e.g. Ensemble, Cloverleaf, Rhapsody, desirable. * Knowledge and demonstrated use of at least one scripting knowledge (SQL, PERL, Object Script), desirable. * Familiar with the use of at least one scripting knowledge (SQL, PERL, Object Script), desirable. * Epic application analyst support experience. * Experience application implementing using the software development life cycle (SDLC) methodology. * Good analytical, logical thinking and problem-solving skills. * Good communications skills, both verbal and written.
Education * Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Information Systems, Healthcare Informatics, and/or licensed healthcare professional desirable. * Technology and application certification in HL7, X12, Epic applications, preferred.
